TURKISH AIRLINES (THY) BRASIL

// My interest in Turkish Airlines started out in 2003 with the logo. Yes, it's an artistic and cultural interest mixed with my love of airplanes. The logo has since evolved and now it looks like this. I feel happy whenever I see the logo of Turkish Airlines because it symbolises my adventures in Brazil, a country that means a lot to me as a lusophile.

A partir desta edição, as mensagens de boas-vindas serão em português e inglês. Adoro esta língua. Afinal de contas, este blogue dedica-se principalmente à THY no Brasil, o maior país lusófono do mundo. // Starting this edition, all welcome messages will be in both Portuguese and English. I love this language. And besides, this blog focuses mainly on THY in Brazil, the largest Portuguse-speaking country in the world.

Isto, para mim, não só é um blogue. Pode ser também o sítio onde posso escrever e ler em português porque quero melhorar já que no meu trabalho o uso desta língua é indispensável. // This is not only a blog for me but also a platform where I write and read in Portuguese because at work I have to speak and write in this language and I have to improve my level.

Para isso, criei também a secção "Lusofonia" para ouvir música em português e algumas frases em português para aprender. // For this, I also came up with "Lusofonia" corner for music and videos in Portuguese and some basic lessons in Portuguese as well.

October 2010 Edition

October 2010 Edition Blog Theme

The blog's header image is taken from the Lufthansa website (lufthansa.com/A380) and I have it as a tribute to Airbus 380, the largest passenger aircraft in the world.

I remember back in October 2007, on the 13th, when I first saw the Airbus 380. That was on a Sunday. I was reading the newspaper when the A380 article caught my attention: the A380 was in Manila! But was already departing Manila in that afternoon! I thought it was a bit late as my apartment was a 2-hour bus ride to the spotting place. Not to waste time, I asked my nephews to come with me to the airport and spot the Airbus 380. When I saw it, I was jumping on the streets! That was exciting but funny though and maybe now a little bit embarassing. But what can I do? Haha.

Three years have passed. Singapore Airlines, Qantas, Emirates, Lufthansa, and Air France are already flying the A380. There's more to come (and oh, the gorgeous Korean Air A380 is already being painted: http://www.flightglobal.com/blogs/flightblogger/2010/09/korean-a380-pic-toulouse.html)...

And I haven't flown on one yet. My younger sister did. Talk about harmless humiliation. She flew on Emirates A380 when she went to Dubai from Toronto and back, haha. She said she enjoyed it. Well, my favourite is still the Boeing 777-300ER (no sourgraping here) but somehow the Airbus 380 has grown on me (see?). So as an aviation geek, I have to experience it.

First flight

The 1st of October is a memorable date for me as plane enthusiast. It was on this day in 2001 when I first travelled abroad. It was my first flight as well: a Boeing 747-400 of British Airways en route to London via Hong Kong. Flight number was BA32.

And speaking of British Airways, I'm so happy to know that Captain Peter Burkill, the pilot who saved (together with his co-pilot) flight BA38 that had double engine failure upon landing in London, will be returning back to British Airways! Congratulations! http://www.airliners.net/aviation-forums/general_aviation/read.main/4941107/

Gulf Air's Embraer E-Jets 190

I'm glad Gulf Air's increasing its fleet of E-Jets. The E-Jets in Gulf Air's colour scheme are soe of the best, in my opinion. One of these E-Jets will be used for flights to Yemen. Just look at their picture on their delivery flight to Bahrain from Brazil: http://www.airliners.net/photo/Gulf-Air/Embraer-ERJ-190-100IGW-190AR/1792220/L/&sid=00ed7a0d93b781e622066ed777a4bcf5

Lusofonia Routes

I welcome Luxair as one of the members of the Lusofonia routes group (airlines that fly to at least two Lusophone countries). It already flies to Porto in Portugal and starting December 2010, it will launch a once a week flight to Sal and Boa Vista in Cape Verde (a Portuguese-speaking country in the Atlantic).

In addition to this, LAM Mozambique will resume its Maputo-Lisbon flights starting March 2011 while Delta Air Lines will fly from Atlanta to Luanda via Dakar.

For more details, see "What's on in LIS" and "What's on in LAD" sections of this blog.

What's On in GRU

My aviation blog dedicated to São Paulo-GRU Airport is updated everyday with news about what's happening with the airline industry in São Paulo. The featured airline company is Turkish Airlines.

Japan Airlines has just suspended its Tokyo-New York City-São Paulo service. Effective 1st of October 2010. It's sad. But it's OK because...

It's confirmed! Singapore Airlines will start flying to São Paulo-GRU three times a week. The route will be Singapore-Barcelona-São Paulo. It will start on the 27th of March 2011.

Latest is that Royal Jordanian Airlines may launch Amman-São Paulo direct flights.

Personal

October is the birthday month of one of my good friends in Brazil. Alex, feliz aniversário! Happy birthday and more to come!

Enjoy!

September 2010 Edition

September 2010 Edition Blog Theme

The theme of my blog for September 2010 is: "The Turks Are Flying" taken from www.thy.com. It's made especially for the 2010 FIBA World Basketball Championships recently held in Istanbul, Turkey. USA and Turkey made it to the finals but USA won. Turkish Airlines was a sponsor of the event. Anyway, the picture looks perfect on their main page, I might add. Congratulations to those who came up with this idea.

For my most recent long-haul travel, you can check out my Cebu Pacific Air and Turkish Airlines flight reports from Manila to Hong Kong to São Paulo via Istanbul and back. It's located in the "On the Spotlight" section.

You can also read my other trip reports and travel articles (some of which are yet to be written though, haha).

There's a new entry under the section "Planespotting" (http://thy15.blogspot.com/search/label/Planespotting), I went to MNL Airport Terminal 1. It's not the sweetest place to spot planes but it was OK. Highlight was the Embraer E-Jet 190 of Mandarin Airlines (my first to see one considering that this Brazilian-made E-Jets are some of my favourite aircraft types).

You may notice that my two blogs are infested with route maps. Obviously, I love route maps. Route maps are a representation of my three interests: geography, travel, and aviation. So lately I've got a new hobby: creating route maps!

Big thanks to these two sites:

www.GCMAP.com and its owner, Karl L. Swartz, for the map-generating tool which is...so cool!

www.FlightMemory.com for detailed personal flight stats and maps

The 1st of September is a good friend's birthday. He's afraid to fly so it's really funny to greet him in my aviation-infested blog...but well. And on the 25th is my sister's birthday (but she's not afraid to fly, hehe). Happy birthday!

Enjoy!

WELCOME ABOARD

August 2010 Edition

For this month of August, I've added some sections of the blog that you might find interesting.

The "route maps". That I love route maps is an understatement. If there's a sub-category of "airline geek", then "airline route maps geek" should then be created. I'd be a member. For me, route maps are a visible symbol of geography and aviation combined. And I love both. Route maps are my most favourite be it online or in an in-flight magazine (I can't sleep without reading an in-flight magazine and checking out the route maps of the corresponding airline). My route map section is not the most impressive but not bad for a regular guy who has a serious fear of heights and a tolerable fear of flying but his love for aviation beats them all. That's me. And so I fly!

"Music". Music may not be totally related to aviation but I simply love music (you may actually find aircraft videos here because the sound of a plane's engine is also music to my ears) . I used to sing before yet I realised some few years back that I'd better be a listener than a singer. I can still sing though but I don't dream anymore of being a singing superstar.

"Featured Airport". This section has route maps of the featured airport with all the flights from all continents (if applicable).

There's also "Updates" wherein you can take a peek of what's going on in commercial aviation. I update it everyday when I can. And no, this section doesn't aim to be the greatest aviation news portal of all time.

"http://www.FlightAware.com" is so interesting! I visit it everyday. When you click on the link, you find a list of several airline flying at the moment. Just choose which airline you like to monitor.

This site is one of my favourites: "http://www.FlightMemory.com". This is a tool made not only for aviation enthusiasts to monitor their flights for also for those who simply want to record their flights. This site also generates maps and list of airlines and airports and other related information loaded in your personal page. It's cool.

And http://www.gcmap.com is also a nice tool to generate maps. Thanks to this website, I have cool route maps. Whenever I'm online, I "play" with it. So with http://www.flightmapping.com

As you may notice, some trip reports are not yet complete (I'm currently working on some things nowadays and I still don't have time to write and scan the pictures) but I'll work on those as soon as I can.

If anything, please feel free to contact me.

Hope you like the August 2010 edition of the blog.

Enjoy!

WELCOME ABOARD

JULY 2010
Edition

This month of July 2010 sees the re-launch (whew, what a word!) of my blog with a new visual appearance. Though still on its initial phase and pictures are yet to be scanned and articles that should go with the pictures are yet to be written (especially for my travels from 2001 to 2007), the blog already has some sections working. This is all about travel but geared more toward the flying part of it (for my personal travel photos, I decided to have them in Facebook).

To coincide with the launch (sorry but I have to use this word again, lol), I travelled for the first time to South America, specifically to Brazil, and explore the megalopolis of São Paulo, a city that has been fascinating me for a long time. Since I'm a Lusophile, this visit is also culturally significant as São Paulo is the largest Portuguese-speaking metropolis in the world being the home to more than 20 million people...and counting!

I also took this opportunity to fly on Turkish Airlines and experience its non-stop Istanbul-São Paulo service, launched in March 2010, operating three times a week with Airbus 340/Boeing 777-300ER. This is so far the longest non-stop route of the company at 6561SM and at approximately 14 hours flying time.

Manila to São Paulo requires approximately 25 hours of flying. But who cares?

Map by http://www.gcmap.com: The flight route to Brazil on Cebu Pacific Air (Hong Kong-Manila-Hong Kong) and Turkish Airlines (Hong Kong-Istanbul-São Paulo-Istanbul-Hong Kong)

2. Clicking on "Brazil" tab under the Continents Visited- South America category.
